It would have had either a 1600 or a 1725 with an alloy cylinder head. Great cars, my dad had one when I was a kid. In fact, he bought me home from the hospital in it when I was born. His was a 1600

Hi Jonathan, welcome to the group. Davenger is right on the engine choices, of the two, a 1725 would probably be easier to track down if you are looking for a replacement.

It would have had either a 1600 or a 1725 with an alloy cylinder head. Because it's a Mark 1 or 2 (wraparaound rear glass) it would have been an iron-head 1600. The Mark 3 (flat rear glass) had the alloy head 1600. The 1725 engine did not become available until the Mark 4 (1965 model). You could fit any 1600 or 1725 motor, iron or alloy head. The 1725 is a stroked version of the 1600 and produces more torque and power - but it doesn't rev as hard as the 1600. One thing to watch - the 1725 from the Hunter/arrow cars has a different engine mounting system and while you can use the block in the earlier cars you need the front mounting plate from an earlier engine to make it fit. So you're best off trying to find an engine from one of the pre-Hunter cars - Vogue, Sceptre, Minx, Super minx. Also be aware that the alloy and iron heads have different inlet/exhaust port sequences - you can't fit iron head inlet/exhaust manifolds to an alloy head motor. Cheers, Vic (who once owned a Mk 3 Vogue)

thanks a lot for the info guys. over here its very hard to find their original petrol engines in both versions . here the majority of singer and super minx where fitted with the 15 BMC diesel since it was much more economical to run a diesel.
