Mention of a long trip in a Husky in another thread got me thinking about some of the long journeys in Rootes cars that I have heard about. Here are some: 1) in 1932, William Hatfield drove a Minx around Australia - quite an adventure as many of the roads were little more than rough tracks or droving trails. His story is in a book "Australia through the Windscreen" which can still be found on ebay or through Amazon or Abe books 2) in the 1950s FJ Thwaites drove a Mk 1 Husky from Sydney to Australia - look for the book "Husky be my Guide" Thwaites later drove a Minx Estate extensively around Canada, USA, Mexico and central America - book of this adventure is called "Press on Regardless" 3) in the early 1950s three young women drove a Humber Hawk from England to Australia. This is a little-remembered trip; you won't find a book - the diary of one of the women is being serialised in the magazine of the Humber Club of Australia. 4) in 1959 Rhoderick Walker drove a Series 1 Husky from London to Australia tinyurl.com/y9annf65) About 2007 I met a bloke who had bought a 1936 Minx from a wrecking yard in Glasgow ai about 1976. The car was complete, so he restored it and drove it all over Europe - in Norway beyond the Arctic circle, well into the deserts of the middle east eventually he had is shipped to Australia. Of course there is also the London Sydney marathon win by the Hunter, and the "re-enactment" in 2009/10 by the replica. Anyone have any others? Cheers, Vic

It predates the formation of the Rootes Group, but there was the team who made the first south to north crossing of Australia by car in 1908, driving a Talbot. Back then there were no roads or bridges and not much in the way of civilisation on their route, so it was quite a feat. www.history.sa.gov.au/motor/exhibitions/talbot/1908_talbot.html

well, I was going to put on driving (my dad that is) from lancs to Newquay in Cornwal - 4 adults & 2 children me & my bro in 1962 in a Hillman Minx! About 360 miles including an overnight stay. It seemed to take for ever! more relaxed motoring then obviously. Doesnt compete with the previouse posts does it ! Uploaded with ImageShack.us
