Having suffered from poor oil feed to the cyl head and valve guide wear, I thought lets start at the beginning, rocker cover off and start engine, oil there but not much. Rocker shaft off, crank engine the oil from the head hit the top of the windscreen!! No problem with feed then. Striped and inspected the rocker shaft, number 1 pedestal has a spring steel guide in it to "key" it to the shaft to align the feed hole in the pedestal and rocker shaft. The pedestal should be fitted with the cast circle (in red) facing backwards, towarde No. 4 cyl the rocker shaft can be used either way round as the oil suppy holes are drilled in both ends. This one was fitted but the split was facing the shaft and deformed!!! So the oil supply was poor. If missing / wrongly fitted the oil feed hole in the pedestal and shaft can be up to 90% blocked as this was!!! Rebuild and run with rocker cover removed wow what a mess!! Result quieter engine, and hopefully no more guide problems!!! Sorted now, Ken

Still looking for more oil to the valve gear, 1 check replace cam bearings, if worn you can loose to much oil the cam feed is round the front bearing, next machine a groove round the cam front journal 2mm wide and 1/2 mm deep in line with the oil feed holes next build a new 1700 engine for the Avenger Turbo, I need it to go to Moffat in 2 weeks, can run it in in the way to Scotland!!! Block bored to 90mm and SAAB 900 pistons ready, busy next week As I say "If you don't run them in quick they are never quick!!! " keep it down to 5000 rpm!
