Hi All, Just thought I'd drop a thread about the project I have been planning for a while and finally got round to starting. To be honest I haven't really thought through all the issues yet I will be taking a bit more of a linear engineering approach, but the basic goal is as follows: 2L turbo engine. Manual transmission. Independant rear end. 4 wheel disc brakes. This might happen incrimentally since each of the goals is quite large on this chassis, for instance I will probably end up having to custom make a front subframe to fit around the engine and reset all the steering. Yep.... is an interesting project. What's going on with the transmission...... are you planning to use the matching mitsubishi unit or have you got something else in mind? I keep thinking that I should have maybe gone for something more modern myself...... but I'm kind of committed to the H120 route now.

Trans is going to be T5.
Since the 4G63T was never a RWD engine I am having a custom bell housing made to suit. Since I did not design the bell housing I am limited to transmissions that the guy who developed it had in mind. That was the T5 or the Toyota W50 - 55.

I thought I was bad for making things over complicated, but I'm feeling pretty cool now. Has never occurred to me to take a FWD engine and convert it to RWD. I admire yer spirit Bratfink, but surely there are plenty of good RWD turbo units about..... so why this particular FWD Mitsu engine?

Ideally I'd have got a Cossie YB in there, but they are hard to find in the US. As we all know Rootes cars have tight engine bays, so I was really limited on what would fit. I did try a Nissan KA24E engine first but it was too big. The 4G63T just came along at the right the price with the right amount of HP and fits the hole.

I have a Nissan CA18ET fitted in my other Sunbeam Rapier. It is complete with the Nissan manual gearbox but still runs the original Sunbeam diff and suspension. I didn't fit it myself, was already in when I bought the car and is pushing well over the factory 7lb boost setting. Takes a bit of getting used to cos the back end swings all over the road if you floor it..... especially in damp conditions, (which is normal over here, but probably not where you are). The car weighs in at less than a ton but is a lot of fun to drive once you get the hang of the cars idiosyncrasies. (mostly axletramp and vague steering). Here's a pic of the engine........ Mechanically..... the guy that fitted it did some nice work but the wiring leaves a lot to be desired. Here's one of the car itself...... I call this one the 'Grim Rapier' for obvious reasons but looks cool in black with the side exit exhaust box. Sounds good too! ;D

Nice! I did look at Nissan engines originally, I even bought a scrap 240SX to see if the engine would fit but the KA24E engine that came in the car in the US was too large so I ended up selling it.
Not much progress to report, I am working on the rear end first to get the pinion alignment before placing the engine and gearbox. I'll add some pics in due course.
